Title: Metabolic Effects of Diet Induced Ketosis: Brain and Liver, a “Snapshot”

Background: As the Director of the Metabolic Phenotyping (MPC) and Mass Spectrometry Core Facilities (MPMS), Division of Pediatric Obesity Program at UTHSC – Memphis, I provide knowledge on study designs and technical support to investigators studying the interrelated effects of metabolism as associated with diabetes, obesity and other metabolic disorders, such as cancers and inborn errors of metabolism. I have over nine years of experience serving as the Director of the Analytical and Metabolomic Cores at the Case Western Reserve University, Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center (MMPC.org; a consortium consisting of NIH-funded metabolomic centers). I have years of service as an Instructor for the NIDDK sponsored international course on “Tracers in Metabolic Research: Principles and Practice of Kinetic Analysis”.  My philosophy as a metabolic Core Director, Collaborator and Instructor in the field of metabolic disorders is to be resourceful and work with investigators who benefit from my technical and collaborative expertise on energy metabolism. My background is multidisciplinary and diverse and includes emphasis in nutrition and metabolism, biochemistry, and physiology of organ systems. In part, my research focuses on the metabolic pathologies associated with the dysregulation of glucose and lipid metabolism, such as with obesity, insulin resistance and reperfusion/oxidative injury of organ systems. I utilize a targeted approach to studying regulatory pathways related to intermediary and whole body energy metabolism. Indirect calorimetry, stable isotopes and mass spectrometry together with metabolomics / lipidomics are tools I use to study the metabolic mechanisms that link scientific outcome to alternative treatment strategies. My expertise on in vivo studies and the use of stable-labelled isotopes (13C, 2H2O, 18O, 17O) brings further knowledge to discern the regulatory mechanisms that relate metabolic defects associated with errors in fatty acid, glucose, protein, and ketone body metabolism.
