Narrative Medicine Workshop TONIGHT 6-8 pm

|

The Community Engaged Care Program invites students, faculty, and staff at all UTHSC campuses to join us on Wednesday, February 17 from 6-8 pm for a Social Determinants of Health Intensive workshop with Dr. Jonathan Lewis (Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare). This SDOH Intensive will introduce participants to the topic of Narrative Medicine. Narrative Medicine incorporates the ability to acknowledge, interpret, and act on the stories of others. Healthcare providers who practice with narrative competence are able to approach patients with empathy and cultural humility and are able to recognize their own personal experiences with medicine and acknowledge the journeys of their patients. This session will provide participants with some of the skills to begin practicing Narrative Medicine and directions for further study.

Jonathan C. Lewis, DMin, BCC is Director of Community Partnerships for Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare’s Mission Integration Division. He is an Ordained Deacon in the United Methodist Church and a Board Certified Chaplain. Dr. Lewis also directs the Faith Health Collaborative, a UTHSC student organization that works in conjunction with MLH, Church Health, and the United Methodist Church. For many years, he has led Serving the Underserved, a course designed to teach students about providing care to underserved populations and the ways in which poverty shapes people’s health and lives.

This SDOH Intensive workshop will count toward the Social Determinants of Health Certificate (visit https://www.uthsc.edu/sace/qep/sdoh-certificate.php for more information).
