Information Security TIP OF THE WEEK

|

This week’s tip is a reminder about phishing emails and why you should NOT click on links sent via email. Holiday weeks usually see a spike in phishing attempts, and this week was no exception. Did you get an email this week with a subject of “Thank you for your contribution” or “Termination Notice”? How about “Update Required!!” or “PART TIME JOB OPPORTUNITY”? (Got to love the ALL CAPS!)

Sending emails with malicious links (called phishing) is a common method cyber criminals use to hack into people’s computers. People are tricked into opening these links because they appear to come from someone or something they know and trust. If you click on a link, you may be taken to a site that attempts to harvest your information or tries to hack into your computer. Only click on links that you were expecting. Not sure about an email? Call the person to confirm they sent it.
