College of Graduate Health Sciences, Conference Room , 8th Floor, 920 Madison Avenue

Title: The Bayesian Approach to Data Analysis

Presenter: Fridtjof Thomas, PhD, Associate Professor Division of Biostatistics, Department of Preventive Medicine, University of Tennessee Health Science Center

What is Bayesian data analysis? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this approach? How can it be practically implemented? This seminar introduces the basic ideas underlying the Bayesian approach to data analysis by a fundamental example of statistical learning, shows the basic building blocks of that approach including the essential “mathematical machinery,” and elaborates on the feasibility of real world data analyses following the Bayesian approach.

Keywords: Statistical learning, Bayesian approach, probability, likelihood, prior distribution, posterior distribution, Bayes theorem, conjugate priors, sequential updating, statistical inference, predictive distributions.
