Cybersecurity Scam of the Week – Email Scammers Impersonate U.S. Government Agencies Offering Pandemic Financial Assistance

We have talked about COVID-19 related scams in the past, but this new reported scam is an impersonation of U.S. government agencies offering financial help. All the victim needs to do to get $5,800 cash is to click a link and give away all your personal information, including your Social Security Number.

This link takes the victim to a site that looks like a legitimate government agency, however it is not. They are attempting to get your personal information for nefarious purposes.

Also reported to abuse@uthsc.edu in the past week:

  • [Ext] Read me now – An extortion email wanting payment in bitcoin
  • [Ext] Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) – a scam looking like it is coming from the FBI, in conjunction with the United Nations, authorizing payment to you if you just fill out this form.  While not pandemic related, it is very similar to our Scam of the Week.
  • [Ext] Payment For Compensation – asking for your banking information so they can wire transfer $2M to you.  Yeah, right…….

Stay safe everyone, and remember to report anything suspicious to abuse@uthsc.edu or contact the Office of Cybersecurity at 901.448.1880 or itsecurity@uthsc.edu.
