CBMI Educational Seminar Series: Shining a Flashlight into the Black Box: Feature Selection in Predictive Modeling for Precision Medicine

|

Dear all,

We would like to invite you to our Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBMI) Educational Seminar Series.

Topic: Shining a Flashlight into the Black Box: Feature Selection in Predictive Modeling for Precision Medicine

Predictive modeling is one of the key components of precision medicine. Statistical modeling and machine learning are two elements of predictive modeling. Despite an accurate prediction of an outcome of interest is important, in precision medicine, understanding the dynamics of the input-output relationship may be more important the prediction itself. This is a major issue in front of using black box structured machine learning methods in precision medicine since they are not intuitive due to their non-parametric nature. At this point, feature selection is a way to bring some level of explanation to black box structured models. In this seminar, we will review some of the feature selection methods for both statistical modeling and machine learning methods.
