Title: Future of GPU Computing

Abstract: GPU Computing (a.k.a., GPGPU) has changed the landscape of high performance parallel computing. At the center of this phenomenon are scalable, massively-multithreaded, and data-parallel hardware architecture and the support for general-purpose programming language. The benefits of using GPUs over other high performance parallel platforms are numerous: unprecedented GFLOPs/$ and GFLOPs/watt ratios, accessibility, scalability, and small form factor. Despite the benefits provided by this evolutionary technology, however, there exist a number of challenges that delay wider adoption of these architectures. This talk surveys the benefits and challenges of GPU computing and discusses its future.

Bio: Byunghyun Jang is an Associate Professor of Computer and Information Science Department at the University of Mississippi. His research focuses on high performance parallel computing, GPU-powered heterogeneous computing, and program optimization for emerging processors. Before joining academia, he has worked for industry for several years including AMD as a GPU compiler engineer and Samsung Electronics as a system software engineer. He is a recipient of AMD PhD fellowship award and a HSA foundation’s distinguished professor. He received his PhD in computer engineering from Northeastern University, Boston MA in 2010.
