Other ways to search: Events Calendar | UTHSC

5 Quick Things: June 9, 2020

|

1. Events Calendar

Keep up with events on campus, and let others know about your event – even virtual events – with the events calendar on the UTHSC website! Anyone with a UTHSC NetID and password can post an event, lecture, webinar, etc. by selecting “Submit an Event” at the top right corner of uthsc.edu/calendar.

Please help us fill the calendar with faculty, staff, and student events such as research lectures, important student events and deadlines, trainings, volunteer opportunities, virtual symposiums, etc. The events are searchable and able to be filtered by colleges, as well as by faculty, staff, and students.

2. UTHSC Travel Update

Effective immediately, there are no restrictions affecting UTHSC travel within the United States.

However, UTHSC is following the CDC recommendation that travelers should avoid all nonessential international travel.

3. Cybersecurity: Scam of the Week

This week’s scam is a reported attack on 100,000 company inboxes hit with a voice message phishing attempt targeting hundreds of companies in all industries, including IT, healthcare, finance and more. The subject line of the phish had a personalized message about missing a call and clicking a link to “sign in” to listen to the message.

The attackers were most likely after login data that would be an access point to more services with personally identifiable information or business details. Most phish that start this way are a multi-layer approach to gain access into an organization’s infrastructure.

What else have we seen reported to abuse@uthsc.edu?  Here are a few examples:

  • The classic “romance” scheme asking for more information as “they” would like to meet.
  • Gift Card Scam is making another round – every couple of weeks a dean’s name is spoofed with a gmail.com email address. This one started by asking for “URGENT HELP”.
  • Our own version of a voicemail scheme looked like it came from the “uthsc.edu message system” when in fact it originated in Germany.
  • Summer work opportunity for students – mass email to everyone with the same last name.
  • Amazon spoofed – making someone believe they made a purchase and to click on shipping details.

Stay safe out there everyone.  Any suspicious email can be forwarded to abuse@uthsc.edu for examination.

4. First 1,000 UTHSC License Plate Reservations are FREE!

UTHSC is working to get our FIRST specialty license plate created in Tennessee! However, we must generate 1,000 commitments to move forward with production, and we currently have 570 orders.

The UTHSC administration has generously agreed to pay the $35 fee for the first 1,000 people to reserve the new license plate! Don’t miss out on this great deal – reserve a license plate today (or even a few license plates if you want to outfit all the drivers in your family) to show UTHSC pride and help support educational outreach! These license plates also make great gifts for UTHSC students and alumni.

5. Engagement Series 2020

As a UTHSC family, staying connected to each other is more important than ever. With working and learning from home, and talking with team members and classmates via Zoom and Teams, Human Resources has brought a fun and educational team together to share their experiences, stories, and provide advice for others who are facing this new normal. This 13-week series will take place every Friday from 10:00 – 10:30 am CDT via Zoom.

Check out the upcoming sessions on the website, and register here for this Friday’s 5th session with Lisa Aiken from ITS as she talks about the “new normal” and discusses recent successes, team support/collaboration, strategies on balancing the workload, and advice for other teams!
