Andrea W. Goins, DO, a faculty member in the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Chattanooga, has taken on a new role as designated institutional official (DIO) for the college.
“Dr. Goins has a proven track record of excellent patient care, teaching, and engagement on statewide issues important to children’s health,” said James Haynes, MD, dean of the College of Medicine – Chattanooga. “Moreover, she has proved to be an optimal leader over the last year by volunteering to serve as both interim chair of Pediatrics and interim designated institutional official. Her ability to clarify the highest priority issues related to our Graduate Medical Education mission has been astounding. Dr. Goins will be a robust addition as we continue to grow our impact on our community and the state of Tennessee.”
In her new role, Dr. Goins will work with the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) to oversee all 24 Graduate Medical Education programs, including all 18 ACGME accredited programs sponsored by the College of Medicine – Chattanooga, with a current enrollment of more than 210 residents and fellows.
Dr. Goins received her undergraduate degree from East Tennessee State University and her medical education at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pennsylvania. She completed residency at the College of Medicine – Chattanooga before joining the college’s faculty. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.
In addition to her role as DIO, she serves as assistant professor, division chief of General Pediatrics and Newborn Nursery, and director of Newborn Nurseries at Erlanger Baroness and Erlanger East. She previously served as vice chief of staff of Pediatrics and has been an active chair.
Dr. Goins is married with two kids. In her down time, she enjoys knitting, traveling, and listening to true crime podcasts.
“Having been part of the College of Medicine – Chattanooga faculty for 15 years, I am excited to step into the role of designated institutional official and lead our Graduate Medical Education program into the future – one that focuses on innovation, collaboration, and the continued excellence of our training programs,” Dr. Goins said.
